Overview

IP Check helps you research intellectual property before investing in product development or brand creation.

Use IP Check to:

  • Search patents — Find registered patents that might cover your product's design or functionality
  • Verify trademarks — Check if your proposed brand name conflicts with existing registrations
  • Track potential conflicts — Save trademarks to your database for ongoing monitoring
  • Export research — Download search results as CSV files for offline analysis or legal review

How to Use IP Check

Follow this workflow to research patents and trademarks effectively.

Access IP Check

Click "IP Check" in the left sidebar to open the IP research tools.

Choose Your Tool

Choose the tool that matches your research goal:

  • Patent Check — Search for registered patents covering your product's design or functionality
  • Trademark Check — Verify your brand name doesn't conflict with existing trademarks
  • Trademark Database — Manage and review trademarks you've saved for deeper investigation

Type your search term in the search field:

  • For patents, use keywords that describe your product's features (e.g., "steering wheel cover", "phone mount")
  • For trademarks, enter your proposed brand name or similar names you want to check

Filter & Refine

Use the available filters to narrow your results:

  • For patents: Filter by filing date, patent status, or patent type
  • For trademarks: Filter by status, owner, filing date, or expiration date

Export or Save

  • For patents: Export your filtered results as CSV for offline analysis
  • For trademarks: Select any mark and click "Enhance" to view detailed information, then "Save" to add it to your Trademark Database for ongoing tracking

Patent Check

Search the USPTO database for patents that might affect your product development.

Patents protect how a product looks (Design Patents) or how it works (Utility Patents). Search by entering keywords that describe your product (e.g., "steering wheel cover", "phone mount", "yoga mat").

Trademark Check

Verify your brand name doesn't conflict with existing trademarks before filing for registration.

Trademarks protect brand names, logos, and phrases. Check for existing trademarks before finalizing your brand name or Amazon Brand Registry application.

Exact Match Check

Launch Fast automatically runs an Exact Match Check that displays at the top of results, showing whether your exact search term is available or already registered. This instant feedback helps you quickly determine if your first-choice brand name is safe to use.

  • Document research — Create a record of your trademark due diligence for business planning

Best Practices

Get the most out of IP Check with these research and evaluation strategies.
Choose Distinctive Names

Fanciful or arbitrary words (made-up words like "Kodak" or common words used in unrelated ways like "Apple" for computers) are stronger and safer than descriptive terms.

Search Variations

Check plurals, singulars, hyphens, spacing, phonetic equivalents ("lite" vs "light"), and misspellings to catch potential conflicts you might otherwise miss.

!
Focus on Relevant Classes

Trademark conflicts matter most when marks cover similar Nice classes. Review goods and services descriptions carefully to see if they overlap with your product category.

!
Check IP Before Investing

Run IP checks when you're seriously considering a product and moving toward sourcing or launch. A quick trademark check early can save you from falling in love with a brand name you can't use.

When to Get Professional Help

IP Check gives you the tools to conduct initial research, but it's not a substitute for legal advice.

Consider consulting an intellectual property attorney when:

  • You find a granted patent with a title and type that closely match your product
  • Your proposed brand name returns an exact match or very similar trademarks in your product category
  • A competing brand with a reputation for enforcement appears in your results
  • You're planning significant investment in inventory, tooling, or marketing

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about patents, trademarks, and intellectual property research.
What if I find a patent that matches my product? If you find a granted patent with a close title and type match, pause before moving forward. If the match is close and the patent is still active, consult a patent attorney for a freedom-to-operate analysis. If the patent has expired or the match isn't as close as it first appeared, you may be clear to proceed.
How do I know if a trademark is too similar to mine?Trademark similarity goes beyond exact matches. Two marks can conflict if they sound alike (phonetic), look alike (visual), or have similar meanings (conceptual) and they're used on related goods or services. When uncertain, consult a trademark attorney before filing or launching your brand.
Can I still sell if there's a dead or abandoned trademark?A DEAD or abandoned trademark isn't automatically safe to use. Check why it was abandoned and when. If it was abandoned recently or for administrative reasons (like missed deadlines), the owner may still have common-law rights to the mark.
Should I check IP for every product I research? Not necessarily. Use IP Check when you're seriously considering a product and moving toward sourcing or launch. If you're narrowing down to your top 2–3 product ideas, run IP checks on all of them before making a final decision.
